Cancer is one of the major causes of death in New Zealand.
Research indicates that up to 30% of cancers can be prevented.
Many cancers can be cured if found and treated early.
The Wellington Division of the Cancer Society promotes healthy
lifestyles by encouraging the community to remain smoke free,
be sun smart, to eat smart, get regular exercise and if you
drink alcohol, do so in moderation.
For information about being Smokefree please refer to the
tobacco control section of the Cancer Society of New Zealand National Office website. To view the 'Out of Sight Out of Mind' video on the dangers of smoking please follow this link. This video explores the way tobacco is marketed through shop displays, the impact on children, and smokers trying to overcome their addiction.
Being Sun Smart is important in preventing skin cancer. Check out our
SunSmart Strategies and know how to prevent and identify
the signs of skin cancer including melanoma.
The SunSmart School is a new initiative encouraging schools to provide
a sun safe environment for its students. The programme has
been successful within the Wellington Divisional region and
has recently been introduced to schools in most parts of New
Zealand.
