The Wellington Division introduced the SunSmart School Accreditation
programme to all primary schools in Wellington, Kapiti, Wairarapa,
Marlborough and Nelson schools in 2000. This
programme is now available to schools in most parts of New
Zealand through their local Cancer Society Divisional Branch.
Schools that qualify for Sunsmart Accreditation are awarded
metal signage and their performance is monitored every two
years.
In order to qualify schools must comply with the following
criteria:
- Develop a School SunSmart policy
- Sun protection and skin cancer awareness incorporated
in the schools curriculum
- Behaviour of students, staff and parents towards sun protection
- Sun protection in the school environment
- Monitoring and reinforcement procedures for sun protection
in schools
Schools that would like further information about the Accreditation
programme - This is currently being updated, it will be launched Sunsmart Week (13 - 19 November 2005).
