Having cancer can be a very traumatic experience. Other people
may have fears or misconceptions about cancer, and this can
make you feel very lonely and isolated.
Support groups allow people to discuss their experiences
and concerns with other people who have cancer. Many people
find this is of immense value. This support is unique, as these
people have all had to deal with the physical, emotional and
social problems associated with cancer.
Benefits of a Support Group
- Being with people who understand.
- Having a refuge from the stigma and prejudices related
to cancer.
- Gaining confidence.
- Increasing your quality of life.
- Making new friends.
- Increasing your knowledge about your cancer.
How Support Groups are Organized
Some groups are cancer specific such as the Prostate Cancer
Support Group and the Multiple Myeloma Cancer Support Group.Other
groups are organised according to age ( e.g. Can X ) or geographical
area ( e.g. Hutt Valley Cancer Support Group ).
Support Groups usually meet monthly. A few are led by someone
experienced in group work and others are organised by the
group itself.
