Your generous support enables us to:
- Fund vital research into the causes
and treatment of cancer. The Cancer Society funds
around 50% of all cancer research in New Zealand through
project grants for scientists and their highly specialised
equipment. This research is of international importance
and means every New Zealander's voluntary contribution plays
a vital role in the world-wide effort to prevent and control
cancer.
- Good quality research depends on
co-ordination of information from international sources.
The Cancer Society also assists by means of grants for post-graduate
scholarships, by bringing overseas experts to New Zealand
and by sending our scientists to important international
meetings.
- Provide information and support
for people affected by cancer and their families.
Our Support Service staff and volunteers provide a wide
range of care and support including practical assistance,
emotional support and information about cancer and its treatment.
- To prevent and detect cancer early
in our community. The Cancer Society aims to prevent
and detect cancer early in our community. Smokefree, SunSmart,
Nutrition and Physical Activity health promotion programmes
have been developed to raise awareness and encourage people
to adopt healthy lifestyles.
- Act as the main public advocate
on all cancer related issues: The Cancer Society
acts as the main public advocate on all cancer-related issues
e.g. tobacco control, skin cancer prevention, nutrition
and physical activity and overall cancer control in New
Zealand.
